Bike Around the Borough Scoops Cycling Award

Hackney's Bike Around the Borough has picked up the best schools initiative prize at the 2013 London Cycling Awards.

Last May, over 240 schoolchildren from 17 Hackney schools took part in gentle bike ride, across landmarks and green spaces.

Using the main roads and practising the skills developed throughout year with national standards cycle training, were just some of the experiences of the young cyclists

Training for the teachers were also provided. They learned how to become ride marshals in order to help their school group and improve their skills for future rides.

The award, which recognises the best in London cycling, was presented to the sustainable transport teams at an event hosted by Ned Boulting.

“Bike Around the Borough is a fantastic way of getting young people interested in cycling.” said the Councillor Feryal Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Hackney Council

More than 300 schoolchildren are expected to take part at this year's Bike Around the Borough which will take place on 27 June, while the cleaners in Hackney do their job.
